Passage: Hebrews 4:8-13

Resting with God

In spite of the sinful disobedience of men, "there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God."

God has always meant for his people to have rest. Those who were caught in the wilderness with their sin, could see no further than the land that God had promised them. The land represented rest from their wandering and a renewal of their relationship with God. The rest that was offered and is being offered for the people of God is one that is modeled after the rest that God himself enjoyed after finishing creation.

We should therefore strive with all that we have to enter into a rest with God. The reason that we must strive to enter this rest, is not because we will somehow earn this blessing if we work hard enough. We must be working hard to enter God's rest so that we do not "fall away by the same disobedience" as God's people in the wilderness. Working hard is a preventative measure. The word of the Lord is sharper than any two-edged sword and leaves everyone "naked and exposed" before God.

By resting with God we find relief from the constant battle with our sin. By resting with God we are given value that lifts us out of despair. By resting with God we have a constant companion. There is a true and joy filled rest that is offered to the people of God.

Questions

  1. Why does God want his people to have rest?

  2. Why did God rest on the seventh day?

  3. Is there anything in our life that is hidden from God?
