Who is Melchizedek?

Melchizedek is a mysterious figure in scripture. We know very little about him, yet he is very important for understanding the priesthood of Jesus.

We are first introduced to Melchizedek in the book of Genesis (Gen 14:17-24) under the title the King of Salem. He brought bread and wine out to Abram for a victory celebration as he was returning home from battle with five kings. Melchizedek stops Abram, feeds him and then blesses him as a "priest of God most high."

"See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils." Though Abraham has received the promises for God, is it Melchizedek who us honored in their meeting. Abraham was blessed by the greater man of God.

The writer of Hebrews notes that Melchizedek's name means "King of Righteousness" and his title means "King of Peace." He has not record of family and no record of death. Because of this the writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus fulfills Psalm 110:4 as a priest who will be "priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."
