Passage: Hebrews 8:5-7
The Better Ministry of the Son of God
Earthly priests served the shadows of the heavenly realities. Their work, though important and needed, was not ultimately eternal. Instead, their work pointed to the greater reality of Jesus work as the true priest. The daily sacrifices pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The daily prayers of the priests make way for the mediation and intersession of Jesus before the throne.
As for Jesus, his work as Priest is eternal. He is high priest in the true temple of which the earthly temple was copied from. He mediates a better covenant that offers eternal blessing based on eternal promises of God. In this way, he is the priest of a better/more important ministry.
If the work of the earthly priest had been sufficient to eternally forgive sin and save a people for God, then there would have been no need for a new covenant and a new high priest. Their work was not sufficient, it did not forgive sin, it only prolonged judgement. Thankfully God made a second promise and has appointed Jesus the High priest of the eternal covenant.
