Satisfy Us

"I'm hot!"

I've recently noticed a trend with my children. Lazy summer days are not good for their attitudes. As the temperature has increased and the desire to be active has decreased, their ability to control their actions and words has melted away. Laying around in front of fans helps their skin feel cool, but only serves to increase their dissatisfaction. They are always seeking more ways to be comfortable, and complaining when they cannot find it.

Our children are a microcosm of their parents. How quickly we forget the benefits of the most beautiful gifts in life. How quickly we become dissatisfied with our lot and long for more. Our children are sinful on their own, but the expression of our sin shapes the way they express theirs. Our discontentment is echoed in their complaint of "I'm hot!"

We Always Want More

Just as our children are longing for an ice cold drink of water on those hot days, we are always longing to be satisfied. We usually make a list of needs and desires that we think will comfort our longings.

"if I just had this...."

"If only they would...."

"The right....would make me happy."

When we think we have attained these things they come up whoa fully short of satisfaction. We always want more, and quickly add to our list. Satisfaction is illusive when we are seeking to be find it where it never will be.

Satisfy Us

True satisfaction is found not in gifts, treasures, or circumstances but instead is found in God himself. He has created with longings that go far beyond our own ability to satisfy them, therefore we must look to Him for the answers.

"Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days." Psalm 90:14

"I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." John 6:35

When we have realized that we have been searching for satisfaction in the wrong places, we can direct our longings toward Christ. His love and sacrifice for actively unworthy people is soul satisfying. His continual companionship gives us comfort that will get us through even the hardest circumstances and the hope of eternal life by His side gives us a longing for the future that is promised to one day be satisfied.

Satisfy us, O God, with your steadfast love and teach us to hunger and thirst for you so that we will surely be satisfied.
