We Sing

The Fathers Delight

I believe that our Father in heaven has ears that find anything His beloved children sing to be a beautiful and sweet masterpiece. Perhaps he quiets the angels and asks them to listen to his child as we lift up a song of heartfelt love and praise.

We Should Sing

We find this command to sing many times throughout the Bible. How amazing that our God created us to be a singing people!  He made our vocal chords able to create pitch, rhythm, and tone. God made our minds able to create beautiful poetry linked to melodies and harmonies that would pull and tug on our heartstrings. He meant our mouths for praise and so He commands us to SING!

"Sing to the Lord, all the earth!

Tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

His marvelous works among all the peoples!”

1 Chronicles 16:23-24

Young children know this command deep in their bones and they sing all day and night, in public or all to themselves in the bathroom, with no inhibitions. Our kids don’t care if they are on pitch or whether the words they utter are even part of the English language or make complete sentences. They sing because they’re happy and they know it!  And to a mama’s ears their interesting noises are like a glorious aria meant to be recorded and shared on every social media outlet.

“Sing to him, sing praises to him;

tell of all his wondrous works!

Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!”

Psalm 105:2-3

Modeling Praise

Though we sing all kinds of songs throughout the day, we as parents try and model singing praise and worship to our Savior a bit differently. Generally we just try to be worshipful people ourselves. We incorporate songs of praise in our family worship and we spend time on our own singing praise to our beloved God. We worship with the larger body together at church. Each of these times we are showing that this kind of singing is different from singing “the Wheels on the Bus” or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” When we sing praise songs we have a holy, awesome, praiseworthy audience of One to whom we direct our hearts and songs. There is no better reward than hearing your four year old singing loudly from her room with eyes closed a song she’s made up just for her loving Father, “You made everything! You made the whole world! I love you! You are so awesome! You are so strong! I love yooooouuuuu!!!”
