Choose your own Adventure
Imagine you are sitting around the table on a cold and rainy evening. The dishes that were full of food are now almost empty. The kids are begging to get down so that they can squeeze one more hour of play time in before bed. Dad and Mom are excited for a little time alone, and the night seems to be winding down.
What should your family do?
This is where your family life becomes a choose your own adventure.
The Choice
It's at moments like these that every family has choices to make. Do you put the kids to bed early and get extra time together or let older kids go off to do their own thing? Do you have some kind of family night with TV or Movie? Do you make a the family clean the house so that the children decide going to bed is better than cleaning? These types of moments offer a mirade of choices.
It is also in moments like these that offer wonderful opportunitites. They can be harnessed to bring the family together for a time of worshipping God. The way God sees it, there is no moment that He is not worthy of your family worship.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Ideas for Harnessing the Moment
Here are some ideas that your family can do in moments like these that will honor God.
Grab a Bible and read a story before eveyone gets down from the table
Dad or Mom could initiate a time of prayer. "Let's each think of one person that we could pray for tonight."
Your family could sing a song to finish dinner. Choose a family favorite or at least one that everyone knows.
You could memorize a verse of scripture together at the table.
The family could listen to a recording of the Bible together. (Bible.is is a free dramatized reading of scripture)
Mom or Dad could turn on some music that helps the family prasie God; then sing and dance together.
Read a book together that helps the family remember the goodness or greatness of God.
Maybe there IS a movie that reminds your family of how awesome God is.
The Sky is the limit for taking advantage of moments like these, but the most important part is to be intentional. Plan for the moment. Remember God has entrusted you with this family. You are leading your family's faith adventure, and it is one of those awesome choose your own adventure stories.
